61 year old Patricia Stoute hadn’t told her husband about her debt problems, which she’d built up in overdrafts, loans and 14 credit card debts.

The inquest heard that she’d leapt to her death from a church tower, after leaving a suicide note for her husband which told that all the debts were hers.

Patricia died after jumping from the Carfax Tower in Oxford during lunchtime, narrowly missing shoppers underneath.

After the inquest, her husband Kenneth, 69, urged those with similar debt management problems to talk to their partners.

He said: “If you’ve got a problem, confide in your husband, let him know what’s going on. The Government has all these schemes to help but the best person to help is the person living beside you.”

Ivan Cooper, Chairman at debt advice specialists Chiltern, said: “I’ve never seen a debt that cannot be sorted out, so it’s dreadfully upsetting to hear that Mrs Stoute took her life due to debt management issues.

“It may seem like there’s no where to turn, but in most cases the stress associated can be lifted with a some professional debt advice.

“If anyone has any debt that is causing them to worry, whatever the level, it’s best to seek impartial debt help from a reputable provider.”
