Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones distraught as drummer Stuart Cable dies

Tributes have been pouring in for former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable, who died in his home last weekend aged 40.

Figures from the music industry who knew Cable – including former bandmate Kelly Jones, DJ Chris Moyles and comedian Rob Brydon –have expressed their shock and sadness at the news, along with armies of fans and local residents in Cable’s hometown of Llwydcwyd, near Aberdare.

A post-mortem is yet to be carried out, but reports suggest that Cable died after drinking in a local pub and choking to death on his own vomit upon returning home. His body was found on Monday morning. Police in South Wales are choosing not to speculate on the cause of death until the post-mortem results are in.

As well as presenting a popular show on Radio Wales with DJ Bethan Elfyn – who said that “Lots of things were going well for him.” – Cable was planning to perform with his new band Killing for Company at next weekend’s Download Festival to celebrate the pending release of their debut album.

Cable’s former bandmate, Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones, has expressed his own shock and distress at the death of his childhood friend. Following a very public rift between the two after Cable was sacked from the band due to his problems with drink and drugs, Jones and Cable reconciled and have been friends ever since.

Jones spoke about the last he heard from his friend last weekend:

“I texted him on his birthday and said happy 40th. He said ‘I never thought I’d make it to 40′, and I said ‘Well, you’ll live to 100′. And that’s one of the last things we said to each other, which is quite strange really.”
